Sidalcea malvaeflora is a
late Spring blooming perennial California native. Checker is widely
tolerant of different soil types often being found in grasslands, ditches,
and other disturbed sites. Sidalcea does require significantly less
than normal Summer garden water. Checker will hunker down for
the summer retaining just the lower rosette of leaves unless it gets
really dire and it will cast those off as well. Sidalcea is a larval
food for Blues and Hairstreak Butterflies.
