Cestrum newellii
provides these brilliant flowers in the summer, followed by red berries in
the fall. The flowers attract
hummingbirds. Cestrum newellii has downy leaves that have a
reddish cast on the new growth. The Red Cestrum will grow to 6-8
feet tall and usually about half that width. The plants are hardy to
temperatures in the mid teens, but will have a significant amount of
damage if they go through temperatures below 20. The will tolerate
full sun near the coast, but seem to prefer a bit of mid-day shade
inland. This is a great plant to add to your hummingbird
garden.
