Clarkia unguiculata * Woodland Clarkia, Elegant Clarkia
Clarkia unguiculata can be found by the thousands alongside trails and roads. The distinctive windmill shape makes the pink flowers of Elegant Clarkia easy to recognize. Clarkia unguiculata is common below the 5000 feet elevation level through the coast ranges and Sierra Nevada foothills. Clarkia unguiculata starts to bloom in the late spring and is often the food source of Swallowtail caterpillars. A number of hybrids are available in general wildflower mixes often under the old name Clarkia elegans. Native mixes often include this reliable seed.
