Anicia Checkerspot Butterfly - Euphydryas anicia
The Anica Checkerspot Butterfly is in eastern California gardens in April and May. This one is sipping the nectar of Gilia capitata. Egg laying is on Penstemon, Owls Clover and others. Nectar feeding is on Gilia, some composits including Golden Yarrow. Gilia capitata is a reliable wildflower to grow from seed. A number of xeric Penstemons are on the market from our desert Southwest.
