Lagerstroemia - Crape Myrtle Flowers

Lagerstroemia indica flowers can be single or double. There are white, pale pink and rich pink flowers. Or even an almost royal purple. Lagerstroemia indica will generally bloom from July into September. Each variety blooms at a slightly different time with 2-3 weeks of glory. Lagerstroemia indica will do best in the inland valleys. There is a strong tendency towards getting mildew on the leaves in coastal plantings. The weight of the spent flowers will bow the branches. I think the Crape Myrtle looks its best when the spent flowers have been removed. This can become time consuming with more mature trees, it is very much worthwhile with young trees. And in manicured gardens the Crape Myrtle trees are often pruned to a manageable size so this can be done each year without risking life and limb when the flowers are removed.
