Vitex agnus castus ~ Chaste Tree

Vitex agnus castus can be grown in the garden as a slow growing tree or as a large shrub.  The spires of blue flowers on the Chaste Tree are produced in the early Summer as many other plants are fading.  Vitex agnus castus is both drought tolerant once established and winter hardy.  The Chaste Tree goes winter dormant but has suffered no real damage with temperatures in the low teens.  With age Vitex agnus castus gets a grey black bark that looks like cobblestones.  Vitex agnus castus is a slow growing plant that will eventually reach 20 feet or more.  With a moderate effort the Chaste Tree can be kept to 10 feet tall and wide.  Fortunately the fresh cut foliage and branches are fragrant making this a pleasant chore.
