Tradescantia sillamontana - Cobweb Spiderwort

Tradescantia sillamontana, the Cobweb Spiderwort is about as interesting without the pretty pink flowers as it is when it has them. The striking geometry of the foliage is the reason to grow this plant. Tradescantia sillamontana is native to Mexico. The Cobweb Spiderwort is drought tolerant but will survive in a garden with moderate water so long as thes soil is well drained. Tradescantia sillamontana grows to about a foot tall and spreads to a couple of feet. The Cobweb Spiderwort grows in full sun near the coast but would prefer a little protection in hotter inland gardens. Tradescantia sillamontana is evergreen in frost free gardens, and cold hardy well into the teens if adequately mulched. Tradescantia sillamontana will tolerate quite a lot of shade but the foliage turns more green and the branches become more pendulous.
