Serenoa repens, the Saw Palmetto, is a slow growing palm, eventually growing 7-10 feet. The trunks clump and are prone to sprawling. The leaves are fairly small for a palm but well armed with spines. Serenoa repens is native to the Gulf Coast and southerly part of the Eastern US. The Saw palmetto is used medicinally and has been utilized as a food plant. Serenoa repens requires regular water. The leaves stay more silvery near the coast and turn greener inland. Serenoa repens is winter hardy into the mid to low 20°'s
