Scabiosa caucasica * Caucasian Pincushion Flower

Scabiosa caucasica has larger flowers and is more upright in its growth habit than the other pincushions.  Scabiosa caucasica has long green leaves at the base.  The flower stalks grow to about a foot.  Scabiosa caucasica blooms from late Spring through much of the Summer if the blooms are removed and repeats lightly in the Fall.  Scabiosa caucasica grows in full sun to light shade and does best with decent moisture and well prepared soil.  Scabiosa caucasica is a good cut flower and it works well as a dried and pressed flower.  Scabiosa caucasica has not reseeded in our gardens, though some of the other species have.  Scabiosa caucasica is Winter hardy to zone 4.
