Pterocarya stenoptera
is a fast growing tree related to the walnut. The Chinese Wingnut
can grow to 70 feet or more both tall and wide. The trees we
planted were 25-30 feet in 3 years. The Chinese Wingnut prefers
regular water. Pterocarya stenoptera requires
some thinning to clean up crossing branches. Space should be
provided for the impressive trunk and for the surrounding soil to be
lifted by the roots. The Chinese Wingnut seed catkins hang a foot off the
branches, the foot long divided leaves do an impressive job of
screening and providing shade. Pterocarya stenoptera is hardy to -10
F.
