Penstemon triflorus - Heller's Penstemon

Penstemon triflorus is native from Texas into Northern Mexico. Heller's Penstemon is quite drought tolerant, and does well in a hot sunny garden adapted to desert heat. This Penstemon may also be found under the common names, Scarlet Penstemon and Hill Country Penstemon. Penstemon triflorus requires well drained soils. Penstemon triflorus foliage is glossy green and grows near the base of the plants. The flower stalks bloom in early Spring and can repeat in Fall. Heller's Penstemon can reach up 2 feet or so in height. The flowers vary from red to pink. The deep throated flowers of Heller's Penstemon are a hummingbird favorite. Penstemon triflorus is Winter Hardy into the low teens. Penstemon triflorus is a potential larval food source for the Common Buckeye Butterfly and the Variable Checkerspot and could be a nice addition to your butterfly garden.
