Neomerica caerulea * Walking Iris, Apostle Plant

Neomerica caerulea is a striking plant in almost any context.  I have grown this Iris in a variety of contexts.  The Walking Iris grows to 3 feet or so.  Blooms of the Apostle Plant are produced when it is well enough established, though it does not always require the 12 leaves that this name might imply.  Neomerica caerulea will bloom in full sun to moderate shade for about 6 weeks in the Spring and can have a smattering of blossoms through the Summer and into Fall.  The blossoms seem to last longer in a shadier location.  While the Walking Iris appreciates some water, they do quite well in an arid shady location.  Ours have bloomed in full shade on no summer water following our record drought season.  Neomerica caerulea can survive temperatures into the high teens though all foliage will be long gone.
