Mimulus Jack with its
wine red flowers is almost always sporting at least a few blooms.
Mimulus Jack grows well in full sun near the coast but prefers some mid
day shade when planted in inland gardens. Good drainage conditions
are required for the shrubby Mimulus cultivars. This can be
accomplished by planting on a slope or mound with heavy soils if a
drying out period is allowed between irrigation cycles. Mimulus Jack
is Winter hardy into the low 20's. The branches are easily
broken. It is best to site Mimulus Jack away from traffic, wayward
hoses and shortcuts taken by the dogs and kids. Mimulus Jack is a great addition to the Butterfly
Garden and the Hummingbird
Garden. Mimulus is a larval host plant for the Checkerspot
and Common Buckeye Butterflies.
