Dicentra formosa * Bleeding Heart

Dicentra formosa plant is a California Native that prefers shaded moist slopes below 7000 feet.  The green ferny foliage of Dicentra formosa might be enough reason to plant this plant by itself.  But the flowers are truly exotic.  This patch was 20 feet across.  It was found at 3,000 feet elevation on a North facing slope in the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range in the Gold Country.  Plants are a foot to 18" tall.  There are a number of cultivars of Dicentra formosa on the market.

Dicentra formosa 'Aurora' has all white flowers and bracts.  Click here to buy plants.

Dicentra formosa 'Luxuriant' has reddish pink flowers with fringed petals.  Click here to buy plants.
