The California Dogface
Butterfly is also known as the Flying Pansy. The female California
Dogface below is feeding on Lantana. The caterpillars prefer clovers
and other plants in the pea family. This is the California state
insect and was featured in a 1976 commemorative postage stamp. The
California Dogface Butterfly adult will feed on False Indigo, Sages,
Lantana and plants in the Manzanita family. Using these plants makes
the California Dogface Butterfly a relatively common resident in the butterfly
garden.
