Artemisia absinthium ~ Absinthe

Artemisia absinthium is native to Europe and Northern Africa and has a long history of being used as a medicinal plant. Absinthe is a toxic plant if used improperly. Artemisia absinthium can grow to 4 feet or more tall and wide. Artemisia absinthium prefers moist well drained soils but will tolerate pretty exceptional drought. Artemisia absinthium is tolerant of heavy soils. Artemisia absinthium blooms in Summer into Fall. Artemisia absinthium has naturalized through much of North America. Be careful when planting plants in your garden that are too well adapted to our environment, particularly in gardens ajacent to wild areas. Artemisia absinthium is a known allergen, interestingly it is reported that the symptoms are noticed in the mid-morning hours. Artemisia absinthium is hardy to temperatures well below what we will likely see in California.
