 A Tutuer for the Garden

Home      Garden Projects

A tuteur can be used to provide a vertical accent to a young landscape, a support for a small vine, or, as in this case, a haunt for the local guardian spirit.  I use the grasses (Miscanthus zebrinus)  in flower arrangements fresh as well as dried.  I like the movement and sound that they provide in the landscape when the breeze comes through.  Their effect can radically change with the seasons.   In late winter as the new shoots come on I cut back the old ones to 6" tall.  By mid- summer they are 6 feet or more tall.  In the fall they start to flop a bit and turn a great straw color and make rustling noises with the breezes.  A little local noise helps drown out the neighbors and enhance the feeling that we are in our own secret world.
