Hummingbird feeders are
usually red. People often use nectar with red dye but this does not
help the hummingbird feeder attract the hummingbirds and surely doesn't
help the quality of their diet. I hung my hummingbird
feeder from a post with a wire. I can coat the wire with sticky goop
that catches the ants should they find it. That way I don't add to my ant
problems. Since hummingbirds are very territorial using several
hummingbird feeders spaced around the yard helps to separate the birds and
you will get more birds in your yard. Keeping space around the
hummingbird feeder so they can see that no predators are about also helps
bring them in.
Hummingbird feeders should be the size that can feed the birds that
come to it in 2-3 days. Extra food left in your hummingbird feeder
can get mold and sicken your birds. Hummingbird food should be
replaced frequently and the feeders washed.
If you have hummingbird feeders you may find that
Orioles are interested too. Particularly if
you put the feeder in a sunny location and make sure at least one of your
feeders has a standing bar
since the Orioles don't hover while they feed.
